Birth of a Rose: A Modern Jazz Ballet When I was approached with the idea of composing music for the Allegro Dance Company’s Mother’s Day show, I immediately began to think of the endless possibilities of interactions and improvisations between jazz and dance. I strove to write something that could be both familiar and stable for the audience and dancers, yet edgy in regards to the quartet’s performance. I wanted the music to be able to stand on it’s own, but also to invoke an indelible image that could be personified by modern dance. When the two components did finally come together, something spectacular happened. My original thought of combining two art forms to produce something fresh was surpassed by this intuitive, organic conversation between body and sound. The premier of Birth was a moment I will never forget, and I look forward to future inspiring performances.
